Loyalty is long-term. Performance reviews, goals and bonuses are short-term. As we all should have learned in Psych 101, the nearer a consequence to the behavior, the stronger the consequence. The factory model (more widgets in the next 6 months) is 100 years old: think, Henry Ford. It's a sad fact that most tech companies are based on that 100-year old model.
