Gartner published that Visual FoxPro was dead in early 1996, while VFP 9.0 shipped about 9 years later. It was projected that Microsoft would sell 30 million Windows Phones by the end of 2011, while they have sold less than 2 million in near 9 months, with 7 months to go to the date of that projection.
There is really very little difference between Gartner predicting the mobile phone market in the next 3-5 years and anyone on this thread making their own prediction. Analysts get paid for their predictions, they get paid more (web traffic and subscriptions) for making big bold headline news predictions, but don't get fined or lose anything when they turn out to be incorrect years after incorrect predictions.
