lo! - Actually I read somewhere that all our TV/radio waves etc are probably not going very far; they are weak signals and would probably fade very quickly. I understand that CharlesH is right; we are not calling out loud enough and haven't been doing so for long enough. Secondly, more interestingly, I read that there is little point in sending a powerful signal since there are essentially only 3 outcomes;

1) Deaf ears - the receiving party are not advanced enough to have developed their own receiving equipment.

2) Insufficient ears - the receiving party can listen to the universe but have the problem we have, too much data, cant find the needle.

3) Sufficient ears - the receiving party can listen for and find our signal.

The first two cases are useless to us. In the last case, we have two further choices (1) they are so far away that communication is all but impossible so why even bother, or (2) they have developed the means to traverse the distances involved. In this latter case, if the aliens are anything like humans have been throughout their history, they would come here and enslave us and destroy us like we have done with every "less" developed civilization we have ever come across.
In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends - Martin Luther King, Jr.
