"Leave it to Beaver" was Shakespeare compared to some of these "reality" shows.

Speaking of shows from that era, I learned something in an article about Newton Minow the other day. He was the chairman of the FTC who famously described television as a "vast wasteland" in a speech 50 years ago. The lords of television didn't like that much. The doomed sunken ship on "GIlligan's Island" was named the SS Minnow, the spelling altered only slightly.
