Some of those are pretty funny.

To me the only firm rule of good writing is never be boring. Make the reader want to keep reading. You can break every rule in the book if you follow that one. I gave my daughter Emily that advice when she was young and she is already a better writer than I am.

For a more formal guide, there is the classic Strunk & White:
