To deflect questions about something as mundane as buying a house seems illustrative of her obsessive image management. Of course all politicians manage their images, including President Obama, but she seems to take it to an almost paranoid level. She only speaks at appearances where she can expect adulation. My theory is she is deeply insecure about being on the national stage. There is nothing in her past to suggest world leader potential, unless you count being a star of her high school basketball team. She was briefly governor of an insignificant state (politically) and then the VP candidate on a losing ticket. That's her resume. She has already reached the limits of where a red meat agenda, designer glasses, a great smile, and great ta-tas can take her. (If that sounds sexist, tell me it's not true).

I am certainly sensitive to the topic of women and stalkers. You don't even want to know how much I worry about Allie showing up at the wrong house at the wrong time this summer. The organization takes precautions but it's not like she has a trained bodyguard two steps behind her.

She had her first bad experience yesterday and called me distraught. It was with a housewife, not a man. The minute the woman opened the door and saw that Allie was selling something she went berserk. I hate you damned door to doors and if I ever see you again I will get my gun. Allie said this is so much more horrible than I was even told to expect. She was really, really upset. I did my best to walk that tightrope all of us parents know intimately. I said if you feel in danger or if it's really bad, I will get you home with no questions asked. But if it's not, hang in there at least a week or two. It's hard going out of your comfort zone. She called back later yesterday, back on her rounds, saying she was doing better.

Letting go of your child is really hard, even when they are adults. You keep wanting to jump in and take care of it for them. It doesn't work that way.
