>>>In the UK if you are low paid you can get social security benefits , help with you rent etc. So effectively we subsidise people in low paid jobs.
>>>
>>>I'm not saying they should be paid the same as a skilled worker but the job market shouldn't be distorted by this sort of well meaning government intervention.

>>>
>>>OK, now I see what you mean. It is the same here in the states. People who are below a certain income level can get food stamps, subsidized low rent housing and so on.
>>>
>>>I am not so sure how well meaning the government intervention is. Once people are dependent upon the government, they will continue to keep the politicians that are feeding them in power. IMHO, it is not about taking care of the poor. It is more about staying in power.
>>>
>>>If we really wanted to help the poor we would teach them to be self-reliant.

>>I never, ever thought I would be on food stamps. But I am glad I am. It puts food on the table for my daughters.
>>
>>Do I hate it? Every hour of every day. I do not view it as long lasting. And I have paid in way more than I am getting. But right now, yeah, I am glad to have it.

>Whose fault is it that you're on food stamps? I'm sure you can find a job if you really really wanted to. It's your own fault for not keeping up with technology trends. Perhaps you should look into changing fields so you can support yourself?

I have never blamed anyone but myself for any troubles I have.

I have been trying to transition to .NET for several years. It's been very difficult getting a foot in the door without work experience.

Do you think I enjoy being out of work? I hate it. I turned down a job offer a couple of weeks ago because it was so lowball (1099, low rate, no benefits). In retrospect I should have taken it until something better came along.
