I think the Windows Phone 7 (and now Windows 8) UI, based on the Metro UI, is something like DOS UI with imaging.

I use to have a Zune with the Zune Marketplace Pass, but got rid of it after half of the music I had downloaded from the Zune Pass was removed from the 'buffet' library. This is mostly the fault of the music studios, removing much of their music from the all-you-can-download agreement. I've used Netflix since 2000, and in the last year there are hundreds of quality movies that 'use to be' available via Instant Streaming online that is no longer available via streaming, due to the studios wanting to push sales of DVDs and Blu-rays. Simple example, the great movie Good Will Hunting has been on streaming for a long time, but will be removed via streaming tomorrow because that movie will be coming out in Blu-ray later this year.

I do like the Office 2007 ribbon UI, but I also customize the Quick Access Toolbar with many functions.

I think you'd be better off learning WPF rather than Silverlight. And I think it's best to wait to hear what Microsoft announces at the Build conference in September to get a good idea of their technology/platform stack roadmap.
