>Big corporations with many shareholders become psychotic entities that pollute the environment, harm people, cheat, steal, evade and are otherwise evil entities.

Not at all. I firmly believe in the awesome power of capitalism to fill every niche and void in society. I also firmly believe in the power of laws and policy to act like levers to direct the power of capitalism. In this regard, the fact that corporations are recognized as separate legal entities (essentially people) shields the shareholders and decision makers from the consequences of their actions. The problem here is that you can't put a corporation in jail.

If a private citizen had been caught releasing a single barrel of used motor oil into the gulf they would be in jail and fined many times their annual salary. BP is responsible for releasing 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico and the corporation was merely fined a fraction of their annual revenue.

The examples of corporate mis-conduct go on and on and on because the corporate legal entity protects the guilty decision makers like an impenetrable force field. Something needs to change.
