No, we cannot because some would change the entire topic of a thread after and would confuse everyone involved in it. This goes the same with a message. If someone replies, it wouldn't be nice if someone would change the previous message pretty much entirely making then the message for the reply to look obsolete.

Some sites allow this. Here, we always adopted this policy in order to avoid some weird situations that already happened on several other sites.
