I suppose you could check each character to see if the CHR() value is a valid alphanumeric character or not (just check an ASCII character list to make sure you have the right range of numbers) - although checking character by character sort of eliminates that "efficient" thing you wanted...haha - perhaps someone else will have a better idea.
