That is all the opening I need to plug a terrific small movie called "Big Night", which I rewatched over the weekend. Stanley Tucci (with hair!) stars as Secondo, along with Tony Shalhoub as his older brother, Primo. They are recent immigrants from Italy who run a money losing Italian fine dining restaurant at a time when the only Italian food Americans were interested in was spaghetti and meatballs. The cast is full of well known actors who were not well known at the time (1996) -- Minnie Driver, Isabella Rossellini, Ian Holm, Marc Anthony, Allison Janney, Liev Schreiber. It's a charmer. It is well known among food lovers for its depictions of Italian dishes, the piece de resistence being timpano. Some of them have even gotten together for dinners with the menu mimicking the one in the movie's climactic scene. If you find yourself in the mood for a sweet offbeat movie, you could do far worse.
