I guess we just learned it differently. Maybe I'm wrong. Imagine that ;-)

Do you want that book about Pat Tillman? It has been sitting here in the stack at the top of the stairs. I think you would enjoy it and would consider it small tribute for your 18 years in the military to mail it to you. Well, enjoy is not exactly the right word, nor do I have any political point in mind. It's not political. It is the story of a guy -- forget the NFL angle -- who enlisted as a soldier, went to Afghanistan, and died there. He is truly one of my heroes. I am a huge sports fan and have exactly one piece of sports attire -- a #40 Arizona Cardinals jersey with Tillman's name on it. Tim Lincecum is not my hero. Roy Halladay, as good as he is, is not my hero. Pat Tillman is a hero.

The galling part is the coverup. The military brass and White House lied to everyone right up and down the line, including his family. He had a ferocious mom (who obviously made him part of who he was) who eventually forced the truth out. Only in a court of law did they finally admit he was killed by friendly fire, which everyone who was there knew from the beginning. They totally stonewalled.

Eh, no use debating it again. He was a hero, we can agree on that.
