Given McCain's health issues, there was a real chance he could die during his presidency. I went from donating to McCain's primary run in 2000, to not even voting for him, in part, because of Palin. He kept talking about how Palin has "energized the base". Guess what John? The base doesn't win elections. The middle does. And Palin's approval numbers from the middle are atrocious. I was extremely disappointed with many parts of McCain's campaign in 2008 - not just his pick of Palin.
