I do not about BTK, but afaik OBL was never put on trial so there was neither confession nor irrefutable evidence accepted by a judge, I am not even sure if he was even charged by the Justice maybe you can shed some light on this for as I said, I do not really know but I do not remember ever reading about a trial or formal charges.
