I don't "get" why this is turning into such a big issue. It's traditional to respect members of the military but like most forms of true respect it's voluntary, not an obligation or entitlement. Sort of like showing respect to the President: not everybody around here does that either. Yeah I know the slogans about respect for the office not the person, but you might say the same of the military, meaning you can respect it without having to respect everybody who signed up and now claims special status. I'd also suggest that anybody who has been a marine has it in them to ignore provocation rather than getting all worked up. Seems to me that some people are really digging the whole "you offended me" thing at the moment at the risk of more pointless bannings, friction, and tales of sound and fury signifying nothing.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
