Should work OK. I use a similar function:

FUNCTION ISDATE(lvValue)
*--Returns whether expression is a date or datetime value which is not blank or null. Rough emulation of SQL Server's own ISDATE
RETURN INLIST(VARTYPE(m.lvValue),"D","T") .AND. .NOT. ISBLANK(NVL(m.lvValue,{}))
