You could try the hardware toggle between laptop screen only, laptop + external, and external screen only to see if any of those result in something visible. Usually Function + some F key combination.
Also, some laptops with discrete graphics have advanced Control Panel display applets that give you things like virtual desktops. If you're using anything like that you'll need to go into that applet and adjust appropriately.
