I had the same problem with Word 2007, with a slightly different symptoms. I was using it to export thousands of documents into PDF, and after about 200 documents it would reach the memory consumption of about 500 megabytes, and would then crash. On manual reopen, it had all these documents listed in some kind of list on the left - and there was no way to clear that list but manually. No interface that I found (and, sure, finding anything related to anything M$ is an uphill battle - M$ search gives you all the sales pitch blurbs for the last 20 years and not one helpful article; googling it out is only marginally better).

At least, in my case, closing it every 200 documents helped; the memory would get released and speed came back to normal. Any document which had any errors on it would stay in the list of unsuccessfully saved documents until I cleared the list manually (and there's no way to clean the list at once, not that I found (again, finding...).

Also, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/257757 doesn't leave me confident that Office automation has much of a future.
