>>criminal... identity theft... actually stole the password from this site of another member...

Even if this were true, lets keep a sense of proportion: the person who hacked Sarah Palin's email in 2008 and published/changed things to try to derail her campaign, still was not found guilty of wire fraud or identity theft and could have walked away had he not tried to obstruct justice. Unlike your "crime of the century" and subsequent terrible vengeance that cannot be excluded if people insist on dredging this up again.

IMHO the the most important detail in both cases is that it is dangerous to pick easily guessed details for online accounts. A malicious person can easily create havoc if they can impersonate, which is why forum owners have to go to so much trouble to trace access once trouble starts.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
