I like to read in the sunshine - maybe because, as you say, in Britain we don't get too much of it. And I don't find even bright sunlight a problerm - one can always wear shades.
If I had a screen that was usable outdoors, even on a cloudy day, I'd be always working outside unless it was raining :-}
Conversely, if the Kindle *didn't* work well outside I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.
