Take a look at the wwHoverPanel. It encapsulates the functionality you need to be able to make a callback to the server from a web page and then display those results "on top of" a link. Look in the manual: Web Control Framework > Web Control reference > AJAX Controls > wwHoverPanel
The basic idea is that the link on your web page calls a bit of Javascript code (running in the browser). This code makes a callback to your server code to retrieve the information it needs to display (either the raw data or the actual HTML snippet), then the Javascript code uses this information to either render or inject the HTML code into the current page. In most cases people will use a third party Javascript library like jQuery to help simplify things.
