Thank you for the personal side. It has been a weight off my shoulders to be working again and it has made me calmer. Which is good, because it has been a month of massive changes. Allie heads back to Milwaukee next weekend and Emily -- my baby! -- starts at Madison on the 31st. I ran an ad to sell the dogs, since the house will be unoccupied most of the time, and was quickly swamped with offers for Crash, the yellow lab. His new owners picked him up last Sunday. The girls were really PO-ed at me, no matter how many times I told them there was no choice. At lease they agreed he went to a good home. The parents have had dogs before and the boys, who are 7 and 4, are at the right age for a dog and were wildly enthusiastic. They wanted to take both dogs, which their dad kiboshed.

There seems to be less interest in puggles so Butch still needs a new home. She was excited to see me on Friday, and also Allie's friend Carla, but for the most part she seemed depressed. Emily said she was like that all week. We have been trying to give her to someone we know, with no dice so far. I am going to run an ad on Craigslist with some of Emily's pictures of her. Those big eyes will melt the most crotchety soul. And if nothing else happens there is a no-kill animal shelter near us. I know from personal experience, when I was interested in adopting a Chow (before getting Butch from a private seller), that they screen prospective adopters carefully. Who lives in the house, how many hours a day is the house unoccupied, have you had other pets, do you have them now, what are they like, on and on and on. They don't give them to just anyone. In fact they didn't exactly turn me down for the Chow but strongly advised me it was not the right breed for me. Chows were bred and trained as protective dogs, sort of the Dobermans of China. They don't care too much about humans other than as potential threats. Chow Mein (hey, I didn't name him) was given to the shelter by an Army guy who was called into active service in Iraq.

The GF and I spent this weekend together. All was well on the surface but there was an undercurrent of tension. I tried to prepare her that things will be different for a while. It has not yet taken hold. About the only upside of unemployment was we could spend lots of time together, three and four day weekends. That is out the window for at least the next six months and it could be worse after that. I can only deal with so much at once -- have I mentioned the contract gig is challenging? -- and am trying to keep the R thing on the back burner. Yeah, right, good luck with that, Mike.
