>>Even with the patents, Motorola Mobility was losing money. Even with both parts, Google will be hard pressed to earn back its investment...
Fair enough... at this point, Machiavelli would issue warnings to Google's loyal device partners. ;-) But Google does seem to be master of the long game. I'm reminded of the Chinese manufacturers who used price to dominate the car battery industry and drive everybody else out, after which prices rose again. In that case, a small pain for some years gave a major long-term benefit. Firms that can demonstrate that discipline can do very well indeed.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
