Then most of the readers of the US media are. Things like "Teheran, Iran" or "Helsinki, Finland" are commonplace. Most of the places in Europe have at least one namesake in the US, but putting ", China" after every mention of Beijing irritates me too.
Though, I don't think the readers are morons per se. They are so only in the editors' eyes.
