How to obtain ptm map file version prior to open it via Mappoint automation?

In short, Mappoint 2011 can work with maps created in previous version only after converting them to the new version. With automation it happens automatically, but it takes time, and there is no native dialog that would warn user to wait or cancel, etc. Meanwhile some of the users still work with Mappoint previous version and maps should be accessible regardless Mappoint version.
It would help if the application can recognize the map file version prior to trying to open it.
