FWIW, I have an admittedly ancient dBase-V multi-user application with many indices and typically around 10-15 users. I used RH Linux and Samba as a server for many years. Once in a blue moon (which occurs more often than you might imagine over the years) inexplicable little data corruption and index problems would occur. Eventually I switched the user over to Windows Server (probably 2003 the first time around) and mysteriously all those little problems just went away - poof.
