>>Today's announcement should come as no surprise. OLEDB is a COM-based technology and Microsoft has been killing off COM for the past few years.

Since 1999 a lot of people will have moved from ODBC to OLE DB based on the "everybody knows/best practice" urgings. Perhaps they'll have a different perspective, especially if they got caught in one of the previous episodes as well.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
