I originally titled the thread "9/11 + 10." It was rejected for being all caps ;-) (Really).

Putting anniversary in quotes just meant I think it is a joyful word and in this case it was not a joyful event.

One of my main memories of 9/11 is also about a daughter. I was working from home in my basement office when my wife called. "Turn on the TV," she said. I turned it on and saw one of the early replays, among millions, of the plane hitting the second tower. Our younger daughter's class was going on a field trip to downtown Chicago that day and I rabbited over to the school to warn them. It wasn't far fetched to wonder if this was a widespread attack and downtown Chicago is not exactly an obscure location. By the time I got there they were well aware. The bus was parked out front, empty. I went inside and almost bumped into the principal on the stairs. "We know," she said, hurrying on her way. Apparently I was not the only parent with apocalyptic concerns. I found Emily and gave her a tight hug.

And then for about three days I watched CNN. Lots of phone calls incoming and outgoing. What I mainly felt was the sense that we were living through something with which we had no experience.
