Without this change in the program, it's a bad design, and I suggest fixing it. In other words, I suggest fixing the reason for the problem. A solution to require that there always is a CD in the drive, is only to delay the problem until the CD drive breaks, or the CD is unreadable.

One thing to check, is whether you have an invalid directory in the path setting. That can cause all kind of unpredictable problems, and it will slow down the program a lot.
