I can't tell you what to do, only what I did. I have an early Kindle (when they were going for $300, which is the price you pay for being an early adopter) and bought a leather holder for it. I am reasonably careful with delicate electronics, it was more of a just in case thing.

I assume you know there is a treasure trove of free literature available for the Kindle. If the author is long dead, it's free; no royalties to pay. I have the complete works of Shakespeare and the complete works of Dickens, which is a heck of a start. The other day I downloaded "Robinson Crusoe" and "Treasure Island," again free.
