Local languages and culture are on their way out. English is taking their place, bit by bit. Most of the industry and arable land is in foreign hands. Local TV production is replaced with franchises of US and UK reality shows (and the local ones, as I hear, are just as weird as their role models). A large percentage of newspapers are foreign owned. The remainder don't have their own correspondents around the world like they used to; they are mostly translating news from Reuters, BBC and the web. Today's reporters don't even know our names for cities in the neighboring countries, they mistranslate them from English. At the grocery, the assortment on that stall near the cash register is about 95% the same as I remember it at Walmart or Kroger. Most of the local brands have vanished. This is based on what I saw here and a bit in Hungary, but also on websites of other similar countries.
