'vi' was basically a screen-view version of 'ed' with some extra bells-and-whistles. The search-and-replace command as well as block-edit commands were pretty powerful and it supported regular expression pattern matchng. The "command-line" style commands were of the same forat as the ones used in 'ed' and 'sed.' The other neat trick that 'vi' (as did several other text editors) had was to set up with an edit buffer log. If you got disconnected during the middle of an edit session, you can reconnect, then tell 'vi' to replay the last edit session and you'll be back where you were when you got disconnected! 'vi' was one of the editors that utilized the 'tags' system, so if your files were set up with attached tag information, you can quickly navigate through your files.
