First of all, make sure when you create a SQL database you give it tons of room to grow, and if you set it to autogrow, make sure it grows A LOT so you don't have to do that except maybe once a year OR LESS.

Also make sure you run regular maintenance the shrinks the DB and truncates the logfile after backup.

SQL databases really should not have to grow very often.

You might want to turn off autogrow and just have you DBA grow it manually when needed and convenient..
