>>What would you like to see happen?

I'd like to see an affluent, confident middle class, membership of which is a worthy goal for somebody poor who is prepared to work hard to get there. Also because the middle classes are the drivers of the economy. They drive jobs in local communities as well as the consumption that gets an economy rollicking along. Much of this derives from the wealth and perception of wealth in the middle class. Both of these are going backwards according to the stats. As a result, the middle classes are saving their money which perpetuates the recession and because they are uncertain about the future, there's less appetite for risk and the whole "nothing venture, nothing gain" philosophy that gets things jumping.

Were the 1950s good times? 1960s? 1970s? Whatever. Pick a time when solid middle class people felt affluent and vigorous, and aim for the wealth conditions that they enjoyed as a share of their economy. Some may call this meddling, but it seems little different from decreasing the capital gains tax to 15% that led to a massive concentration of wealth in a certain other sector of the economy.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
