I went to sleep early after a grueling but satisfying week. Now I am wide awake in the wee hours and surfing youtube, rewatching some old favorites like Secretariat in the Belmont and Bruce Springsteen and Tom Morello playing together at the Rock and Roll HOF ceremony.
Somehow from one link to another I came to a live performance of Simon and Garfunkel singing "Bridge Over Troubled Water." I consider it about the most perfect song ever written if you exclude "Amazing Grace." Years after the fact Paul Simon said in an interview that when he wrote that song he knew right away he had nailed it. He wasn't being egotistical, he just knew this one was a winner after so many misguided attempts. As the songwriter and as a guy with a good singing voice he wanted to sing the lead. They rehearsed it in the studio and at one point they switched parts and Art Garfunkel sang lead. Paul was man enough to say, yeah, this one is Art's. He just does it better. Enjoy!
