I've done it with ASP.NET membership - initially with websites (fairly easy) and then with web applications (more difficult). I haven't found any good examples of others doing it. Some suggestions and snippets, but nothing close to complete.
Doing it in Silverlight adds complexity by removing the simple data access, and I think the last little bit of convenience available from things like the profile class disappear (I've worked around that too but again it seems like a real pain).
