Is this the first time you ever had 20 machines banging on the file? Even if the corrupted index problem only happens rarely, using views really is huge in eliminating that problem.
You might be able to play around with your anti-virus software - (don't scan network drives and maybe excluded your database files..etc) and get the problem to go away for now - but odds are it will resurface sooner or later - particularly if the number of users increases over time.
