Thanks, took a while to read through article.
Tried removing the stored procedure and add it back again, then noticed an improvement in speed -- however after a few tries it went back to taking a long time to execute -- pointing that it's probably something in the stored procedure and how SQL Server is setting up excution plan (as indicated in article).
