He's referring to "A Christmas Story", the movie in which all this kid wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder BB gun. Every time he asks for it he gets told "You can't have one of those, you'd shoot your eye out.". Eventually he gets one and, sure enough, he shoots himself in the eye.
