>>In the end they will lay their freedom at our feet, and say to us, "Make us your slaves, but feed us."

FWIW, here is the invariably snipped-out continuation of this quotation from the Grand Inquisitor:

>>They will understand themselves, at last, that freedom and bread enough for all are inconceivable together, for never, never will they be able to share between them!

Never able to share?! Freedom and bread for all cannot co-exist?! What a lovely fellow. Doesn't sound like anybody you'd vote for.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
