http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2012/jan/18/george-lucas-abandon-blockbusters-star-warsGood for him for recognizing reality. The first three Star Wars movies and the first Indiana Jones movie are all time classics. He will always be remembered for those. When he resumed the Star Wars story many years later it was painfully clear he had lost the gift. There really is something to be said for being young and hungry. Almost all great artists do their best work at a young age.
PS -- Also on the topic of movies, I read a great book review in the New Yorker the other night about two new books about Pauline Kael, the legendary movie critic for that magazine who was the queen bee of movie criticism for close to 20 years. I didn't always agree with her -- probably more often than not I didn't -- but she always made you think and regard movies as a proper form of art. She was a spitfire, that was for sure. One part of the article that made me laugh out loud was a letter she received after shredding "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." (One of my many disagreements with her). It was from the director, George Roy Hill, and began, "Listen, you miserable bitch...." She had criticized some technical aspect and Hill basically responded, Fine, you can say yeah or nay, that's your job and your right, but don't you dare claim knowledge of technology you don't understand. I just love that opening salvo. Talk about payback to dissing critics!
