I presume that there is a problem with the barcodes being printed in that the bars are being printed so close that the gaps between them aren't being resolved. One thing I do recall that some of the old dot-matrix impact printers had DPI modes that were used in NLQ (near letter quality) mode which would overlap the dots (rather than place them adjacent to each other) to achieve more easily-read text. In that case a printer-specific font (either a ROM cartridge or printer-specific "softfont") or graphically-printed one that takes in mind the actual capabilities of the printer needs to be used.
