YouTube has this apparently new thing going where they recommend clips to you based on what you have watched before. This is one from just now. The Byrds are huge in rock music history, seismic. Roger McGuinn was the main guy. David Crosby, later of CS&N, and then CSNY, was in the band. So was Gram Parsons, not in this video, who hijacked one of their albums to launch the style of music known as country rock. Their songs were propulsive, the kind that make you want to get up and dance. You can draw a line as straight as a string from The Byrds to REM to Tom Petty. The word generally used is "jangly."

I had no idea the lyrics were written by a Welsh poet.

Maybe even better is "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better", which IMO is one of the best songs ever made. There are lots of versions of it. Here is one of them, Gene Clark on lead vocals.

UPDATE: Roger McGuinn played a 12 string Rickenbacker, 6 strings on each side.

Another update, another video. This is of Keith Richards performing "Hickory Wind," one of Gram Parsons' best songs. Keef is one of the most famous rockers ever, he is a Rolling Stone, and like anyone else he has had his influences. They were friends until Gram's death and there is no denying Gram had a huge influence on some of the Stones' greatest work. The countryish part of their catalog came straight from Gram.
