I can understand startled and uncertain. Those are experiences and require no explanation. And given the newness of cultural openness about LGBT issues, very understandable.

That said, certainty when asserted as a rule or law of nature does require explanation. In this case, I doubt any explanation offered would hold water, but that's an empirical issue.
