Thanks! Once an object, always an object where the reference is concerned, but this made all the difference.

I don't have the Automation book with me but thought I had the ecopy. After nearly 12 years, it is still an essential resource around here. The Hentzenwerke site says the book is being reprinted. Will the reprint be an update?
It was surprisingly easy to switch from the automation servers instantiating and releasing a 'private' copy of Word to a public copy shared throughout the application session. I expected problems with the wordevents wrapper used for editing since it must be added and removed dozens of times in a typical session. So far, so good. I'm anxious to get the app on Terminal Server at the client site for some real stress testing and updated performance figures.
Now, if someone could speed up changing printers in Word!
