Most computer stores carry only Windows 7 Home. And I thought that SQL Server 2008 Express will give me ability to create bigger database than the Developer Edition (if my memory services me).

No. SQL Server Developer Edition can make larger databases.

Developer edition is just not allowed to run production databases.

Keep in mind - SQL Server Developer Edition is NOT MSDE (Microsoft SQL Developer Edition - old stuff).
