I am with Bill (as is the case surprisingly often as long as we stay away from politics). .NET is not going away any time soon. Sure, there are threats to Microsoft, namely open source, but no one should doubt that they remain a very powerful company whose chief developer product remains .NET. HTML5 is getting a lot of attention but by definition it's a niche technology, not an all encompassing solution. IMO you are thinking in a good direction with C#.NET and SQL Server.

If you decide to go that way I will take on a small piece of it pro bono, to get the experience. I have done SS for a long time and have decent skills there. I have some knowledge of C# and the .NET framework, just no work experience. This could be a win-win.

IAC, good luck with the rewrite.
