>>I think I've mentioned the book "Slavery by Another Name" here before. It won a Pulitzer. It tells the story of how many black men in the South were kept in forced labor until World War II, despite the 13th Amendment. I just learned that there's a new documentary based on the book premiering tonight on PBS:

>Thanks for the heads-up. I love PBS specials; mostly musical though. I tape them to a DVD and then watch in the office, while working (on the second monitor). Just today watched the Michael Feinstein special American Songbook; outstanding show. And I will tape this one too for the time when I am not in the musical mood.

It was pretty good. I think the book was better (but then I usually think the book of anything is better).

One item I remember from the book and heard in the interview on NPR yesterday, but didn't hear them say in the film, was that many (maybe all) Southern states had laws that made it illegal to be unemployed (that was vagrancy) and, for some workers (farm workers, I think), illegal to look for a new job without the permission of your current employer.
