>>>Last such bit is that hunting is still illegal on sundays in some states - for religious reasons.
>
>Yes, but you're confusing religious with societal. Religion used to be the basis for lots of societal decisions. Society changes, then blames religion for society's failure to update laws to reflect the new realities. I suppose there may be some religious groups opposed to hunting on Sunday and more than one first world European nation effectively closes down on Sundays, but blaming religion for outdated secular laws is getting a bit ridiculous.

I blame them for having them in the first place, and then for keeping the social atmosphere such that society avoids repealing such laws, knowing what can of worms will open. Somehow repealing such laws is always taken as attack on religious freedoms, by at least some vocal minority (which then has a disproportionate access to media). Then I blame the society for being lazy.

Unbelievably, back in the seventies and eighties the religions were a sacred cow even in socialist Yugoslavia - some events had to change dates, some things had to be built elsewhere or no permit, some writing was censored - "so not to hurt the religious feelings of the believers", no less, was the official sentence. I only got deurinated later, when I realized that my analogous feelings as an unbeliever are not protected in any way.

Just played a mental game the american way - imagined a situation where I'd claim loitering as my spiritual rite (which it, come to think of it, actually is - it's inherent to my culture, it's always been a way to socialize, an institution unto itself), and an officer would come to disperse me and my coloiterers. Would we be equally protected by the rights of spiritual choice, or just locked up if we protest too much?
